2-Nov: PP 51-60

  1. I really enjoyed the details on the Garden of Eden story. I never realized how the Angles warned Eve not to separate from her husband...how they were helping guide her to make the right decisions.

Also, this really made me think about how much sin is truly around us/me. Pg. 55 says "Whatever contradicts God's word, we may be sure proceeds from Satan." There are many shows we watch that contradicts God's word - premarital sex, disrespect to others, speaking unkindly to each other...all made to be funny and entertaining, but never thought how this does come from Satan. I would never watch a show about vampires, witches, demons - why do I find these shows okay to watch. Both are from Satan? And didn't we read (pg 61) that a "sin in any degree is an offensive to Him". He demonstrated that by giving such a small test of eating of the tree of Life with such big consequences...

And then on pg. 58 how much are we still like our first parents? "Instead of humbly confessing their sins, they try to shield themselves by casting the blame upon others, upon circumstances, or upon God". WOW!!!

It was encouraging to read how we all need to "develop habits of self control" (pg 60). This is not something we are born with but something we need to be always working on. Not just our children, but even ourselves! I know there are areas I'm lacking self control in and keep trying and praying for ways to develop these areas better...

  2. I think this is also an example of something that is not in the bible, so I was glad to see your post questioning her "stories". I too am enjoying reading P&P, but in the bible it says that"She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and she ate it. Gen 3:6 (It is in the middle) It does not say anything about Eve straying from Adam or that the angles warned her not too. I am not sure about this, as I know this is a traditional Adventist Belief, about Adam and Eve, but it is not Biblically sound. So, what do we teach or children??? Rich and other Adventists have always defended Ellen White by stating that what she writes can be proven in the bible, but much of what she writes is not in the bible, it elaborates on the story and lets us see more into it. But is it safe to assume it is correct??? Do we teach Eve wandered from Adam when it clearly does not say so in the bible??

  4. glad to see you posting and reading Kris!!! ;-)

I asked Anita and Dan Bates to help answer some of our questions. I'm with you and am blown away at some of the details behind the Bible stories - things I've honestly never heard/knew before. And question why we don't teach more of these details like in Sabbath School...

  5. Kris - this is what the Ellen White Estates had to say...

    2. WAS ADAM WITH EVE WHEN SHE WAS TEMPTED IN THE GARDEN?

EGW: NO "The angels had cautioned Eve to beware of separating herself from her husband while occupied in their daily labor in the garden; with him she would be in less temptation than if she were alone. But absorbed in her pleasing task, she unconsciously wandered from his side. On perceiving that she was alone, she felt an apprehension of danger. ... She soon found herself gazing with mingled curiosity and admiration upon the forbidden tree" (Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 53, 54).

BIBLE: YES "When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it" (Genesis 3:6).

This is an argument over semantics, insisting that "with her" (KJV, NASB, RSV, Amp & Darby versions, among others, do not include the words "who was" [with her]) means that he had been with her during her entire walk to the Tree and conversation with the serpent.

Following is this text in its original Hebrew, according to the King James Interlinear Bible:

(ishshah) (ra'ah) (`ets) (towb) (ma'akal) (huw') (ta'avah) (`ayin) (`ets) (chamad) (sakal) (laqach) (periy) ('akal) (nathan) (gam) ('iysh) ('akal)

    (Translated literally)

    (woman)(saw)(tree)(good)(meat)(that)(pleasant)(eyes)(tree)(desired)(wise)(took)(fruit)
    (eat)(gave)(also)(husband)(eat)

Ellen White was certainly not the inventor of the belief that Eve was alone at the tree. Even without looking at the Hebrew, consider a few facts:

    — In his conversation with Eve, the serpent never acknowledges Adam's supposed presence (Gen. 3:1-5). In fact, Adam's opinion of her decision is never mentioned until he "did eat." (verse 6).
    — When confronted by God, Adam doesn't blame the serpent, but casts the blame on Eve (verse 12). Had he been at the Tree at the same time, it seems he and Eve together would have blamed the serpent.
    — When confronted by God, Eve doesn't say "the serpent beguiled us, and we did eat" but rather, " the serpent beguiled me, and I did eat." (verse 13).

Many Bible scholars have taken this position through the ages, long before Ellen White ever commented on it.

  6. Thank you. That is very helpful. Makes sense, Adam would have blamed the serpent if he were there. I mean, he was quick to blame someone, so why not the serpent if he had been there.
